Why is Faith Important?

Faith is at the core of our relationship with God. Faith is not a feeling or an emotion, it’s a way of life. We hear about faith all the time, but why does it matter so much? Why does God ask us to trust Him even when we can’t see the full picture?

Faith is the foundation of our walk with God. It’s how we approach Him, how we receive from Him, and how we live for Him. Without faith, there is no real relationship with God. But what makes faith so important?

1. Faith Is How We Please God

The Bible says, “Without faith, it is impossible to please God” (Hebrews 11:6). As Christians, it is essential for us to have faith in God. God desires a relationship with us, and that relationship is built on trust. Faith is choosing to believe in His goodness, His promises, and His timing, even when we don’t fully understand.

When we trust God, we honour Him. We show that we believe He is who He says He is and that He will do what He says He will do. Faith is our way of saying, "God, I trust You completely, even when I don’t have all the answers."

2. Faith Helps Us Keep Going

Life isn’t always smooth. There are seasons of waiting, uncertainty, and difficulty. Faith is what keeps us moving forward when nothing makes sense.

Think of Abraham, God promised him a son, but years went by without any sign of fulfilment. In the natural, it seemed impossible, but Abraham chose to believe God’s word over his circumstances. “He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God” (Romans 4:20-21). His faith kept him going, and in the end, God’s promise came to pass.

Faith helps us endure the waiting, push through challenges, and trust that God is working behind the scenes. It reminds us that even when we don’t see immediate results, God is faithful.

3. Faith Activates God's Promises

Throughout the Bible, we see that faith is the key that unlocks God’s promises. Jesus often said, “Your faith has made you well” (Mark 5:34, Matthew 9:22, Luke 8:48). This shows that faith isn't just about believing in God, but about believing that He can and will move in our lives.

Look at the woman with the issue of blood, she had been suffering for twelve years, but when she heard about Jesus, faith rose in her heart. She believed that if she could just touch the hem of His garment, she would be healed. And she was. Her faith activated her healing.

God’s promises are available to us, but faith is what brings them to life. Faith is what allows us to step into what God has already prepared for us.

4. Faith Helps Us Overcome Fear

Fear and faith cannot coexist. One will always overpower the other. When we focus on fear, our faith weakens. But when we choose faith, fear loses its grip.

Peter experienced this firsthand. When Jesus told him to step out of the boat and walk on water, Peter started strong. He had faith. But the moment he looked at the waves instead of Jesus, fear crept in, and he began to sink (Matthew 14:29-31).

Faith keeps our focus on God, not our circumstances. It reminds us that no matter how big the storm is, God is bigger. Faith gives us the courage to step out, even when fear tries to hold us back.

5. Faith Strengthens Our Relationship with God

Faith is believing in God. It is knowing that He is good, loving, and faithful, regardless of what we see in the moment.

The more we trust Him, the deeper our relationship grows. Just like any friendship, trust is built over time. As we walk with God and see Him move in our lives, our faith grows stronger.

Romans 10:17 tells us, “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” The more we immerse ourselves in His Word, the stronger our faith becomes. The more we feed ourselves with the word of God, the more our faith in Him grows. Spending time with God through prayer, worship also helps us build our faith and trust in Him.

6. Faith Is How We Live as Christians

As believers, we are called to live by faith. We do this by seeing things from God's perspective, and not ours. 2 Corinthians 5:7 says, “For we walk by faith, not by sight”.

Walking by faith means intentionally aligning our thoughts and actions with God’s promises, no matter what we see around us. We live by faith when we:

  • Release control and trust God’s timing.

  • Pray with confidence, knowing He hears us.

  • Step out in obedience, even when we don’t see the full picture.

  • Choose hope instead of fear.

  • Believe that God’s plans for us are good.

Faith changes how we respond to disappoints, how we celebrate victories, and how we handle the unknown. With faith as our lens, we see opportunities for God to move in every part of our lives.
